The rally for Israel they don’t want you to see

What’s happening: More than 290,000 people recently filed into the National Mall to rally for Israel, for the hostages taken by Hamas, and against antisemitism. Politicians on both sides of the aisle made appearances to express support at the largest gathering of American Jews in history.
Bipartisanship: Support for Israel included both Republicans and Democrats as Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senator Joni Ernst all spoke at the rally.
No problems: The event did not feature violent or angry chants, graffiti, or any form of violence. Attendees did not cover their faces. It was a significant contrast to some scenes at recent anti-Israel rallies, including one also in D.C.
More: Israel supporters also displayed a significant amount of American patriotism at the rally. There were many American flags, attendees sang the National Anthem, and chants of “USA” could be heard.
Limited coverage: The rally was under-reported. And, in some coverage, the historic number of people was either omitted or played down by saying “thousands” or “tens of thousands” instead of the more accurate “hundreds of thousands.”
Why it matters: Many media outlets regularly cover pro-Palestinian demonstrations which often turn violent. But polls show most Americans support Israel, and the recent massive rally in D.C. further indicated as much.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING

🤝 U.S. and China forming agreement on fentanyl. President Biden and China’s President Jinping are reportedly planning to address fentanyl in the U.S. when they meet today. A proposed agreement would require China to crack down on chemical companies helping to export the deadly drug in exchange for Biden loosening sanctions on the Chinese government.
🇲🇽 Biden will also meet with Mexico’s president. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will visit San Francisco on Friday with Biden to “address issues of shared concern,” the White House announced. This will include finding a “hemispheric-wide response to” illegal immigration at the southern border. So far, diplomacy with Mexico on the issue of fentanyl trafficking has failed.
📄 Democrats block Israel aid. Democrats refused to pass a bipartisan House bill funding Israel because it didn’t contain Ukraine funding. "The global challenges we face are all connected, and they're all urgent,” said Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA). Republicans argued that aiding Israel is a “separate” and “less controversial” issue than supporting Ukraine and deserves a vote of its own.
💰 U.S. might hand $10 billion to Iran. The Biden administration is reportedly considering whether to unfreeze $10 billion in Iranian funds by waiving sanctions. This comes after Iran helped Hamas plan its historic attack against Israel, igniting a war that has led to clashes between the U.S. and Iranian proxy groups. Biden has already faced strong criticism for freeing up $6 billion for Iran before Hamas’s attack.
WHAT WE’RE HEARING
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said “the calls for a ceasefire” between Israel and Hamas “are outrageous,” drawing cheers at a pro-Israel rally.
Daily Wire co-founder Ben Shapiro called Candace Owens’s remarks on Israel “disgraceful” but acknowledged, “She still works at my company.”
More than 500 U.S. officials signed a letter asking Biden to push for “a cease-fire” in Gaza and condemned Biden’s support of the war against Hamas.
GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley says she would force social media companies to “show America their algorithms” and get rid of anonymous accounts.

Cleaning San Francisco is a choice

What’s happening: City employees in the SoMa district of San Francisco, California, have temporarily removed homeless people and camps, cleaned the streets, and put up a 10-foot fence around a conference building to prepare for a visit from Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The explanation: "I know folks are saying, 'Oh they're just cleaning up this place because all those fancy leaders are coming to town,’” said California Gov. Gavin Newsom. “That’s true,” he remarked, adding that the cleanup had been in motion for months.
Why it matters: San Francisco streets that are normally littered with drugs, human waste, disease, and the mentally ill are now unrecognizable for their cleanliness and safety. Officials have quickly done what liberal politicians have promised to do for decades by eliminating these conditions — but only to impress a foreign leader.
It’s a choice: San Francisco has been one of many blue cities losing record numbers of residents, with crime and lawlessness seen as key factors. Jinping’s visit has demonstrated that big-city politicians could solve the problems they campaign on at any moment.
But they don’t: Left-wing activists, politicians, and journalists constantly frame these issues as too complicated for a government crackdown. Restricting behavior, imposing punishments, and demanding order are seen as right-wing and portrayed negatively. This culture has made iconic American cities unlivable for many.
