Virginia cracks down on woke ideology in schools

Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s new policies grant more parental oversight, urging schools to “respect parents’ values and beliefs” and “defer” to them for decision-making regarding their children.
In a nutshell: Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s Department of Education published new regulations that remove various gender identity protections in Virginia schools. Starting October 27, students will only have access to bathrooms, locker rooms, and sports teams based on biological sex. Teachers and school officials may not refer to students by a different name or set of pronouns or in any way “transition” them without parental consent.
What’s different: The state previously allowed students to use private facilities and join activities corresponding with their chosen gender identity. Schools decided “on a case-by-case basis” whether to inform parents if their child adopted a new identity because some children “may not want their parents to know.” Youngkin’s administration grants more parental oversight, urging schools to “respect parents’ values and beliefs” and “defer” to them for decision-making regarding their children.
Why is this happening? Youngkin campaigned on restoring parental authority in schools, pushing back against mask mandates, sexually explicit books, critical race theory, and more. Gender ideology became a particularly hot issue after a Loudon County school tried to cover up sexual assault by a male student in girls’ bathrooms. Youngkin capitalized on the resulting outrage toward progressivism in schools and is now fulfilling key policy promises.

Radically progressive books are being removed from schools nationwide. The media calls it “book banning.”

According to a new report, more than 1,600 book titles were banned nationally during the last school year through the work of advocacy organizations.
The books: Almost all of the books being restricted in schools contain politically progressive content and promote either transgenderism or critical race theory to children, with some texts containing sexual and pornographic details. Upward News covered some of public schools’ most common radical books.
Political perspectives: Because the books are highly progressive, those on the left view the efforts to restrict these books as racist, transphobic, homophobic, and akin to censorship and book burning. Conversely, conservatives view the in-school texts as political youth indoctrination.
Most Americans don't support the progressive agenda: According to a new poll, more than two-thirds of registered voters are against teaching sexual orientation and gender identity in elementary school. Still, school boards and progressive teachers have been able to sidestep parent sentiment and include these books in lesson plans and curricula.
Big picture: There are two frontiers in the battle over children’s education in America. One is legislative, where governors like Florida’s Ron DeSantis and Virginia’s Glenn Youngkin have worked to restore parental rights in education. The other is through advocacy, where political groups have successfully started to restrict inappropriate books in schools.
